The Medicean Villa la Ferdinanda, also called Villa of the Hundred Chimneypots, stands in the Artimino locality, today included in the Commune of Carmignano. The project for its construction was commissioned by Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici to the architect Bernardo Buontalenti. Completed in only 4 years (1596-1600), it contributed to enhancing the fame of the Florentine architect. The building has a rectangular layout with four-cornered avant-corps. The façade is distinguished by corner bastions suggesting the image of a fortress and by a broad stairway leading to the first floor, built in 1930 by the architect Enrico Lusini, based on a sketch by Buontalenti. The military-like aspect disappears in the airy loggia along the façade, supported by four Tuscan columns. The interior contains various halls frescoed by Domenico Cresti, known as Passignano, and Bernardo Poccetti. On the ground floor are the grand-ducal wine-cellars and the hall of arms. Among the buildings annexed to the villa is the elegant structure of the Paggeria, the pages house that is now a hotel.
Since 2013 the villa has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
