It's the Year of the Fire Horse!

Prato hosts Italy's most evocative Chinese New Year

A 2026 marked by the Fire Horse awaits all those who wish to discover the "secret" behind the success of one of Tuscany's most popular and well-known events: Prato's Chinese New Year, a symbol of a Tuscany you might not expect, but that surprises. 2026 thus marks the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse, and Prato is ready to welcome tourists and residents, offering an unforgettable performance through the streets of its historic centre and neighborhoods.

Chinese New Year (or Spring Festival) is celebrated by millions of people around the world. It has no fixed date, as the beginning of the year must coincide with the second new moon after the winter solstice, a date that, according to the Gregorian calendar, is between 21st January and 19th February. The 16th February 2026 marks the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse, associated with intense energy, movement, and change. The celebrations last several days, with many events. The Lion Dance is particularly famous, with dancers moving lions of various sizes, dancing to music through the city streets. The lion is a symbol of strength and courage, and thus offers happiness and security for the new year.

At 4 p.m. on Monday, 16th February, the sound of the bell at the Pu Hua Buddhist temple will mark the beginning of the 2026 Chinese New Year, perfectly aligning with Beijing's midnight. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, we enter the Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of energy, passion, and courage, movement and change, which drives new projects and important decisions.

On Sunday, 22nd February, the highly anticipated parade will take place, culminating in the city centre with the large dragons and the spectacular Lion Dance, the highlight of the event. Over the years, this grand celebration has become a major tourist attraction, precisely because of its uniqueness.

Additionally, a rich programme of events, exhibitions, and guided tours to immerse yourself in Chinese culture and enjoy this experience.
