The Ancient Carmignano Fair
The Ancient Fair of Carmignano was once the classic farm and livestock fair; the time of the year when even those with lesser economic opportunities bought something that was not strictly necessary.
The oldest quote of the feast dates back to 1392 and is found in a municipal statute, where a kind of market is described near the town hall that then stood in the wall circle of the Fortress. However, in the eighteenth century, on the 23rd of November 1704, it was established that the Ancient Fair lasted for three days, so far was the notoriety acquired and the fame reached by wine, oil and dried figs of Carmignano.
Still today in the Medici hills, where Sangiovese first married the Cabernet grapes, giving birth to a wine among the oldest and smallest DOCGs of Europe, in the week that includes the first Tuesday of December in the main square of the village, the feast is celebrated with dried figs and other typical products of local food and wine.
The country is transformed into a large board with its classic bread and oil, biscuits, dried figs and then wine, which in 2016 celebrated the 300th anniversary of the recognition of Cosimo III de' Medici.
During the fair there are also concerts, art exhibitions, book presentations, cooking shows and antique and handicrafts markets that aim to satisfy all tastes and curiosities.
