Lanificio Sbraci in Cartaia
It is one of the most interesting and partially accessible complexes. As the name suggests, in this place already around the middle of the 14th century, there was a paper mill resulting from the transformation of a previous gualchiera (fulling mill). In 1918 the Sbraci family became the owner of the property and in 1931 decided to raise a part of the factory by entrusting the work to the designer Pierluigi Nervi. The owners also built some apartments next to the factory for employees, as well as refectory, nursing and grocery stores. In 1932 the plant was damaged by a flood of the Bisenzio river, but the damage caused by the Germans during the Second World War was even more serious. The resumption was arduous, the company had become the Fratelli Sbraci Sharing Society but in 1960 it came to the bankruptcy. In 1962, the whole complex was purchased by Giovacchino Affortunati, whose family still owns it. It is currently used for cultural and sporting events.
