Museum of Mural Art

P.zza San Domenico - Tel. 0574/440501

The Museum created in 1974 by the Local Tourist Office, is included since 1990 among the diocesan museums. It represents the first Italian structure started as an "active shelter" for detached frescos, sinopias, graffiti, which are not repositioned in the original places. Access to the Museum is from the Cloister of the Church of San Domenico. Detached frescos, sinopias, graffiti of the fourteenth-seventeenth century can be seen. Works of Niccolò Gerini, Agnolo Gaddi, Paolo Uccello, Il Volterrano are kept there. The Museum hosts provisionally the exhibition of "Treasures of the city" with works from the City Museum (under restoration) and from the Museum of the Opera of the Duomo. Among these, a masterpiece is the Polyptych of Giovanni da Milano (1353-1363), coming from the Ospedale della Misericordia. Another fine example of Late Gothic painting is the Triptych (1425 circa) of Lorenzo Monaco. Other work of remarkable interest is the Tabernacle of the Christmas Song of Filippino Lippi, which reduced into fragments by bombing in 1944 is now restored and recomposed showing the splendid colours.
